Diverse Voices: Overcoming Self-Limiting Beliefs

Our Diverse Voices Network gathered for an energising workshop on Overcoming Self-Limiting Beliefs, facilitated by Yatin Mistry (Mindset Coach). Blending story, psychology, and practical tools, Yatin invited us to look honestly at the “invisible scripts” that can mute our confidence and narrow our choices—and then replace them with language and habits that help us lead with clarity and courage.

Participants practised reframing setbacks without minimising reality and challenging self-limiting beliefs with kinder, truer alternatives. They also explored how to choose language that restores agency and follow-through, while building supportive circles and accountability for continued growth.

Key takeaways:

  • “Outsider perspectives.” Drawing on his lived experience (race, sexuality, entrepreneurship), Yatin modelled how reframing hardship can build empathy, resilience and leadership presence.
  • Events vs. the story we tell. We explored how events are neutral, and it is the story we attach that drives our emotions and actions. Changing the story changes the outcome.
  • Spotting your scripts. Short, guided reflections surfaced four common patterns:
  1. Fear of action (“What stops me taking the next step?”)
  2. Self-talk (whose voice is that, an old teacher, a parent?)
  3. Projection (what we assume others think about us)
  4. The “If only…” sentences (“I’d feel confident if only I…”)
  • Language that unlocks agency. We practised swapping disempowering “must/should” statements for “could/would/choose to” to restore choice, momentum and accountability.
  • “Who’s on Team You?” Name the inner voices (Critic, Perfectionist, Protector, Wise Coach). Decide who gets the mic, and who takes a back seat.

This workshop is part of the Diverse Voices series, creating safe and inclusive spaces for leadership growth and learning. thanks to our host Arup, facilitator Yatin Mistry, and programme sponsors Hatch and Muse for making these sessions free to attend.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and watch this space for the next career-boosting session in our Diverse Voices Essentials series.
